Aug 18, 2026: Consumer Awareness Programme themed “Safe Products, Confident Consumer”, organised by Departments of Economics & Commerce, Kohima College in collaboration with Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection Kohima, Government of Nagaland
A Consumer Awareness Programme on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumer” was organised with the objective of creating awareness among consumers, particularly students, regarding their rights, responsibilities, and the mechanisms available for seeking redressal of consumer grievances. The programme aimed to empower participants with the knowledge and awareness necessary to make informed and responsible decisions in the marketplace. The programme was chaired by Dr. Meyisangla Longkumer, Assistant Professor, Economics Department. Approximately 500 students, faculty members, and dignitaries attended the programme.
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Vitsosie Vupru, Principal, Kohima College. In his address, he highlighted the significance of organising consumer awareness programmes in the present context and emphasised the importance of educating consumers about their rights and responsibilities. He warmly welcomed all the dignitaries, resource persons, participants, and student attendees to the programme.
This was followed by the keynote address delivered by Mr. Shiekhozo, Assistant Controller, LMCP, Kohima. He elaborated on the purpose and role of the LMCP and explained the objectives behind organising such awareness programmes. He particularly emphasised that the fundamental purpose of consumer awareness is to empower consumers so that they can make informed choices and safeguard themselves against unfair trade practices and exploitation.
The main session of the programme was conducted by the resource person, Shri Sunjib Rana, Advocate and Panel Lawyer, Kohima District Legal Services Authority, who provided an informative and comprehensive presentation on consumer rights and protection. He emphasised the importance of being aware of one’s rights as a consumer and stated that awareness is essential for ensuring fair treatment in the marketplace. He further observed that when consumers fail to exercise their rights, market forces may compromise on essential aspects such as price and quality. Therefore, consumers must remain informed, vigilant, and proactive in protecting their interests.
Mr. Rana also drew attention to the changing nature of consumer transactions with the rapid growth of e-commerce and digital marketing. He advised the students to remain particularly vigilant while using various online platforms and to exercise caution when purchasing goods and services digitally. He highlighted the need to verify product information, prices, terms and conditions, and other relevant details before making online transactions. The resource person further educated the students about the consumer redressal mechanism and explained the structure and jurisdiction of consumer redressal forums at the District, State, and National levels. He provided an overview of the procedure for filing complaints and explained how consumers can seek appropriate remedies when their rights are violated or when they face unfair trade practices.
The session also covered the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, and the subsequent Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The resource person explained the significance of these legislative frameworks in strengthening consumer protection and providing mechanisms for the effective redressal of consumer grievances.
An additional highlight of the programme was a special song presented by Mr. Kongkhao, a 5th Semester student of Kohima College.
The programme concluded with concluding remarks delivered by Er. Silo Jemu, Inspector, LMCP, Kohima. He expressed his gratitude to all the dignitaries, resource persons, participants, and students who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme. He also thanked everyone for their active participation and valuable contribution.
Overall, the Consumer Awareness Programme was informative and enriching. It successfully sensitised the participants to the importance of consumer rights, responsible consumption, vigilance in online transactions, and the mechanisms available for seeking redressal. The programme served as a valuable platform for promoting consumer awareness and empowering individuals to become informed, vigilant, and responsible consumers.

Faculty members from the Department of Economics inculcated the newly inducted students of its bachelor programme on the academic rules in Kohima College & also an overview of the FYUGP syllabus & expectations.
April 17, 2026: 5th Annual Eco Meet 2026 themed “Skills Economy”, Organised by Department of Economics, Kohima College
Department of Economics, Kohima College successfully organised the 5th Eco Meet 2026 on this day at the Old College Auditorium, Kohima College.
The programme was centred around the theme “Skills Economy”, reflecting the growing importance of skill-based development in contemporary economic frameworks.
Commencing at 10:00 AM under the chairpersonship of Dr Medongulie Zatsu, the programme began with a welcome address delivered by Lily Angami, Associate Professor & also Head of the Economics Department, who highlighted the relevance of skill acquisition in enhancing employability and fostering economic resilience among students.
The programme was graced by Shri. Zubemo Lotha, Additional Director, Department of Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of Nagaland, as the Special Guest. In his address, he emphasised the critical role of skill development initiatives in bridging the gap between education and employment, particularly in the context of regional economic growth.
The event featured a series of engaging segments, including special numbers performed by both junior and senior students, which added vibrancy to the programme. This was followed by speeches delivered by student representatives—Keneivotuo Kesieze (Senior) and Thungdeno L. Erui (Junior)—who shared their perspectives on the evolving skills economy and the role of youth in shaping it.
A key highlight of the programme was the student presentations, which showcased thoughtful insights and academic engagement with the theme. The session provided a platform for knowledge exchange and encouraged critical thinking among participants.
The Special Guest delivered an insightful message, reinforcing the importance of aligning academic learning with practical skills to meet the demands of a dynamic job market.
The programme concluded with closing remarks from the Chair, followed by a lunch break. An informal session was conducted thereafter fostering interaction and reflection among students and faculty.
Overall, the 5th Eco Meet 2026 was a meaningful and enriching event that successfully combined academic discourse with student participation, contributing to a deeper understanding of the skills economy.
1st May, 2024: Department of Economics celebrates “International Labour Day 2024”
The Department of Economics marked International Labour Day 2024 with an engaging and purposeful event aimed at highlighting the importance of labour rights and promoting the dignity of labour.
Objectives:
1. Raise awareness of labour rights.
2. Encourage dignity of labour.
Expected Outcomes:
1. Recognition of dignity of labour.
2. Become responsible citizens.
The department of Economics with the 6th semester students held the International Labour Day at Thizama Village under Kohima District. The program started with a short speech by Lily Angami, HoD and Associate Professor, Department of Economics. She emphasised on the need to realise dignity of labour and promote work-life balance. She encouraged the students to understand work culture and contribute in the society in all possible ways. After the program, the department conducted a cleanliness drive in the village.
25th April, 2024: 3rd Annual Eco Meet Cum Seminar on “Entrepreneurship”, Organised by the Department of Economics, KCK
The department of Economics conducted the 3rd Annual Eco Meet cum ‘Seminar on Entrepreneurship’ on 25th April 2024 in the auditorium hall at 11:00 am. The resource person for the seminar was Dr. Meyisangla Longkumer, Jt. Director, Department of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of Nagaland.
The seminar was chaired by Dr. Evothung Ezung, Associate Professor. Welcome note was pronounced by Ms. Lily Angami, Associate Professor and HoD, Economics Dept. Dr. Vitsosie Vupru, Principal, Kohima College, Kohima exhorted the students and encouraged the students to take their aims and objective seriously. He stressed on the importance of entrepreneurship especially when the government cannot provide jobs to all.
Objectives
1. Educate the students on entrepreneurship opportunities and challenges.
2. Inspire students on entrepreneurship.
3. Motivate and encourage students on entrepreneurship.
4. Promote creativity.
Expected Outcomes
1. Increased understanding and awareness on the importance of entrepreneurship.

29th April, 2023: Department of Economics, Kohima College organised the 2nd Annual Eco Meet themed “Exceeding the Vision” for the 6th Semester students
The Economics department, Kohima College Kohima organised the 2nd Eco Meet with the theme ‘Exceeding the Vision’ on 24th April 2023 with Shri R.S. Sipuni Pou, Sub- Regional Employment Officer, National Career Service Centre for SC/ST. Government of India, Ministry of Labour& Employment as the resource person.
Purpose
- Acquaint the students with the different career opportunities. The information focus was especially for students of ST and SC.
- Creativity and Talent exposure
Objective
- Keeping up with the vision of the department of making the students of economics all contributors to the society and nit liabilities.
Highlights
The First session was chaired by Dr. Medongulie Zatsu, Assistant Professor Department of Economics. Dr. M. Libanthung Ngullie, the Principal of the college delivered the introductory note. In his introductory speech, he exhorted the students to have a broad vision to achieve target and that one needs motivation and hard work to achieve the vision. He also encouraged the students to thirst for knowledge and wisdom, to learn from one experience to another for achieving one’s target.
Shri Sipuni Pou, while speaking on the theme ‘Exceeding the Vision’ also shared the various flagship programs, trainings and schemes initiated and launched by the Government of India particularly for the SC/ST students and encouraged the students to avail these opportunities to further their careers.
The resource person encouraged the students to log in to their portal and register so that they will be available for career placements and opportunities. The website shared is ncs.gov.in of the National Career Services
There was a showcase of talents and creativity by the students like performing oratory speeches, songs and dances. The session ended with vote of thanks by Mr. Benlo of 6th semester.
A total of 67 students participated and benefitted from this programme.
13th-14th April, 2023: Departments of Commerce & Economics organised a 2-Day Certificate Course on “Securities Market”, for the 6th Semester students
