Kohima College, Kohima (KCK), commemorated its 56th Freshers’ Day on Saturday at the College Courtyard, welcoming the newly admitted undergraduate students to the institution.

The event was attended by Shri. Kethosituo Sekhose, NCS, Director of Youth Resources and Sports, Government of Nagaland, as the esteemed Guest Speaker. The commencement of the program commenced with the rendition of the college anthem, presided over by Mr. Tsüdu Zholia. Subsequently, an invocation was given by Pastor Vetazo Kesoh.

In his welcome address, Principal Dr. Vitsosie Vüprü extended heartfelt congratulations to the incoming students and highlighted the institution’s notable achievements, particularly the remarkable feat of 13 students securing positions within the University’s Top-10 list during the preceding academic year. Dr. Vüprü emphasised that the college’s motto, “Search for Excellence,” encapsulates both a challenge and a guiding principle. He urged the freshers to maintain their focus, actively contribute to the college’s growth, and transform their aspirations into tangible accomplishments.

On behalf of ANCSU, Mr. Nungshilong A. Imsong, Program Coordinator, extended his warmest greetings to the new students, encouraging them to perceive college life as an enriching journey of personal development and self-discovery.

On behalf of the incoming students, Mr. Hechulo Magh, a faculty member from the Department of Functional English, expressed his enthusiasm and gratitude. He stated, “We come from diverse backgrounds, each carrying with them hopes and aspirations. KCK is not merely an educational institution; it is our new home where we will develop into critical thinkers, responsible leaders, and compassionate members of society.”

The day also witnessed the induction of the Kohima College Students’ Council (KCSC) Executives for the 2025-26 academic year, conducted by Mr. Zavikhoto Phinyo, an Assistant Professor.

The outgoing General Secretary, Mr. Chutatu C. Thupitor, presented a comprehensive report on the council’s activities from the 2024-25 academic year. He described his tenure as a journey characterised by service, teamwork, and sacrifice and urged students to confront challenges with courage.

The incoming General Secretary, Mr. Yeshika Achumi, humbly sought the support of students and faculty as he assumed office. Acknowledging the accomplishments of his predecessor, he pledged to introduce novel ideas and initiatives that will benefit the student community and uphold KCK’s values of unity and excellence.

In his address, the Guest Speaker, Shri. Sekhose, reflected on the rich history of Kohima College, which commenced as a night school for working students. He commended its transformation into one of Nagaland’s most esteemed institutions. He highlighted the extensive opportunities available to youth in various fields, including academics, sports, content creation, and emerging industries.

“Talent and perseverance are formidable, but education enhances them,” he asserted, emphasising the importance of balancing academic pursuits with creativity and extracurricular activities. Drawing upon examples from sports, he underscored how determination and discipline can elevate local players into international athletes and encouraged students to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the AI-driven economy and content creation industry.

The programme commenced with the highly anticipated Mr. & Miss Fresher 2025 contest and  a captivating duet performed by Bowe Elah and Wetshelhi Chirah. This year’s laureates were Mr. Mhalezolie, a Political Science student, and Ms. Nyahpo Pinyeih, an English Department student. The esteemed winners were presented with certificates and accolades by Smti. Kaholi Chishi, Vice Principal of Kohima College.

In recognition of their invaluable contributions, the departing council members presented tokens of appreciation to the guest speaker, the pastor, the ANCSU representative, and selected student leaders who have made significant strides during their tenure. Furthermore, the incoming students were also provided with welcome tokens on their behalf.

The celebratory festivities concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Rülevelü Shijoh, Assistant General Secretary of KCSC.

The event was filled with music, laughter, and optimism. The 56th Freshers’ Day reminded students and faculty that Kohima College, Kohima, is more than just an academic institution. It’s a vibrant community dedicated to excellence, personal development, and selfless service.
