February 24, 2026: The Department of Political Science at Kohima College organised a guest lecture for 4th semester students as part of the VAC (Value Added Course) on “Comprehensive Sexual Health Education.” The session was conducted by resource person Dr. Ayang Imti-Nakhro, an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, practising at Oking Hospital & Research Clinic.

The lecture focused on adolescent pregnancy, its associated health risks, preventive measures, and the importance of informed decision-making among young people. Dr. Imti-Nakhro explained that adolescent pregnancy poses serious health dangers to both the mother and child, as the adolescent body is often not fully prepared for the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth. She highlighted complications such as anemia, high blood pressure, premature birth, and low birth weight.

In addition, the resource person discussed the risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and emphasised the long-term health consequences that can arise from unprotected sexual activity. She stressed the importance of awareness, early education, and responsible behavior in preventing such outcomes.

Dr. Imti-Nakhro also elaborated on methods of protection, including the role of abstinence as the most effective way to prevent both unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. She emphasised the importance of safe practices, access to accurate information, and the role of healthcare professionals in guiding adolescents.

The session aimed to equip students with scientific knowledge and promote responsible attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health. Students actively engaged with the lecture, gaining valuable insights into health, safety, and personal responsibility.

The Department of Political Science expressed its appreciation to Dr. Imti-Nakhro for her informative and impactful session, noting that such academic interactions play an important role in empowering students with essential life knowledge beyond the traditional curriculum.
