The Post Graduate Department of Political Science, Kohima College, Kohima, organised a programme to commemorate International Labour Day on Friday, 1st May 2026 at 10:00 am, at the Conference Hall, Kohima College. Themed “Good Psychosocial Working Environments: A Pathway to Thriving Workers and Strong Organisation”.

The programme brought together faculty members and students to reflect on the historical and contemporary significance of labour rights and workplace well-being.
The event was chaired by Koto Thele, MA 4th Semester.

The highlight of the programme was the speech delivered by B. Tangmong Shiu, MA 4th Semester student. In his address, he traced the origins of International Labour Day to its American context, particularly the labour movements that fought for workers’ rights and dignity. He then connected this historical foundation to the present theme, emphasising the importance of creating supportive psychosocial work environments for the overall well-being and productivity of workers. Furthermore, the speaker underscored that Labour Day carried varied meanings across different contexts. He discussed its relevance in India, referring to labour movements such as those associated with the Kisan Party, and elaborated on how labour issues are uniquely experienced within the Naga context. His speech offered a layered perspective, linking global labour struggles with local realities and challenges.

The programme concluded with an official photo session, followed by a brunch for student and faculty participants, providing an opportunity for informal interaction and reflection on the discussions of the day.
