The Department of History, MA 2nd Semester, Kohima College, commemorated International Museum Day on 18th May 2026, themed “Museums Uniting a Divided World” through an educational visit to the State Museum and State Archives, Kohima. The students were accompanied by faculty in-charge Dr. Nutazo Lohe, Assistant Professor, Department of History.
At the State Museum, the students explored the rich cultural heritage, ethnographic collections, traditional artefacts, indigenous technologies, minerals of Nagaland and other historical exhibits of the state.
The first session was guided by Museum Guide Lecturer Mr. Talitemjen who introduced the museum galleries and highlighted the significance of museums in preserving history and promoting public archaeology beyond classroom learning.
The visit to the State Archives in the second session provided valuable insights into the preservation of historical records and archival materials. Ms. Temjenjungla, Assistant Archivist, introduced the students to archival collections, rare books, old maps, newspaper collections, government records and preservation techniques including digitisation and microfilm storage.
The programme offered meaningful experiential learning by connecting academic study with practical exposure to museum and archives, enriching the students understanding of history, heritage and cultural preservation.
