Oct 1, 2026: The Department of Sociology, Kohima College participated at the State Level observation of the “International Day of Older Persons 2026” at NBCC Convention Centre Kohima organised by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland.
The program themed “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Sustems for Longer Lives “ was held to recognise the contribution of older persons to create awareness about the issues, rights, dignity and well-being of the elderly.
The event was attended by two Faculty Assistant Professors Faustina Pongen & Rhipeu Thele along with 50 students Sociology students from 3rd semester.
The students were provided an opportunity to gain deeper understanding of social realities and challenges faced by older persons in society.
The programme highlighted the importance of respecting and protecting the dignity of older persons and emphasised the need for greater social support, care, inclusion and intergenerational solidarity.
A major feature of the programme was a free health camp organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Nagaland. Older persons were provided with health check-ups and basic medical services.
The programme also feature an exhibition of arts and crafts prepared by elderly persons. The exhibition provided a platform for older persons to showcase their creativity, traditional skills and craftsmanship. It also demonstrated the importance of recognising and preservering the knowledge and skills possessed by the older generation.
The event also served as an important platform for sensitising the younger generation about the responsibilities towards the elderly and the significance of creating an-age friendly society.
