English in, ‘On the Job Training’ is for Functional English 6thSemester students. The sole objective is to prepare students for entering job markets according to their aptitude and interest. Each student is placed to work in one occupational job area under an established firm/business establishment where English language is used/applied. The specific job maybe to perform as Tourist Guide, Hotel Receptionist, Teacher, Radio Jockey etc.This, ‘On The Job Training’ is carried out under the supervision of the faculties of Functional English Department. Each student submits a report of the ‘On the Job Training’ so performed.
For the current semester, 11 students chose the hospitality sector to perform as Hotel Receptionists. The Department of Functional English collaborated with the Niathu Group of Hotelsfor the English in ‘On the Job Training’ at Hotel Vivor, Kohima. On the first day, the students were given a detailed and comprehensive orientation by Miss. Tiarenla, Executive, Department of Human Resources, Hotel Vivor, Kohima. The Executive, HR thoroughly oriented the students about the hospitality sector in general, and also exposed students to live operations in a professional hotel environment.
The 11 students were divided into three (3) groups of 4-3-4. They started their ‘On the Job Training’ in three different shifts in a day. The students learnt practical skills regarding operations, housekeeping, food and beverage, and guest-service management etc. The ‘On the Job Training’ aims to enhanceemployability by linking classroom learning with real-life situations. For the students, learning by working in an actual workplace connected them to understand how to use what they have learnt from the vocational subject of Functional English.
