The Department of Sociology, Kohima College, Kohima, celebrated World Intellectual Property (IP) Day under the global theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP.” The event highlighted the significant role that intellectual property rights play in the music industry, particularly in protecting creativity, ensuring fair compensation, and encouraging innovation.
A brief message on this year’s theme was delivered by Khrieneikuo Zumu, Asst. professor, Dept of Sociology, Kohima College , Kohima .
In his address, he emphasised the importance of observing World Intellectual Property Rights Day and explained that intellectual property rights (IPRs) are legal protections that allow creators to control and benefit from their works, prevent unauthorized use, and seek redress if infringed. Focusing on music, he elaborated on how copyright—an essential form of IP—safeguards original compositions, lyrics, sound recordings, and related elements, thus supporting both artists and the music industry. He also noted that India’s Copyright Act of 1957 offers legal backing for such protection.
As part of the celebration, an announcement was made regarding an IPR competition, encouraging students to create original music content. Winners of the competition will receive cash prizes in recognition of their creativity and originality.
The program was attended by faculty and students of the Department of Sociology.
