13 BA 3rd Semester students from the Education Department—accompanied by two faculty members, one from Education dept and another representing the Mentoring & Counselling Committee, Kohima College, Kohima—participated in an enlightening session on mental health delivered by Dr. Viketoulie Pienyü, , MD, Rtd. State Mental Health Institute, Kohima, at the Highland Institute, Kohima. The occasion highlighted the commitment of the Mentoring & Counselling Cell of Kohima College to engage with issues of student well‑being.

Dr. Pienyü addressed the three broad categories of stress: neutral, positive, and negative. He explored their common causes and explained how unmanaged stress may manifest physically and psychologically. Among the critical issues he discussed was the role of elevated cortisol levels, which—if sustained—can contribute to cancer risk, psychosomatic diseases (such as gastric disorders and diabetes), and premature aging. In addition, he highlighted how chronic stress may lead to mental health challenges including depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.

To make the concepts more accessible, Dr. Pienyü shared personal anecdotes, which deeply resonated with the attendees and underscored the real dangers of neglecting one’s mental well‑being. The interactive format encouraged participants to ask questions, which were answered thoughtfully throughout the session.

Following the formal presentation, tea and refreshments were served by the Highland Institute, during which participants continued informal discussions with Dr. Pienyü. The session concluded with a practical demonstration of breathing exercises that can be easily practiced at home, in college, or in any everyday setting to help reduce stress.

This event underscored our college’s commitment to fostering holistic well-being and encouraging open dialogue around mental health.
